Log in again and it should work. I can be in the middle of a Word document or email and then typing letters has the same effect as holding the Alt key and typing the same letter. You mentioned the win key which probably works as well, but if you have somehow encountered this error on a machine that doesn't have a Win key, Ctrl should work as well.
